Lycopodiales are the earliest-branching lineage among the three extant lycophyte orders generally recognized. The circumscription of Lycopodiales has rarely been controversial, but botanists often disagreed on how to subdivide the order. While most botanists recognized a single family in Lycopodiales (Lycopodiaceae), others recognized two families: Lycopodiaceae and Huperziaceae.
